Infant Acne And How To Treat It

By softskinzone

A skin condition that affects newborns is called erythema toxicum neonatorum. This condition is not serious and shouldn’t be a concern for parents. We will discuss what it is, and how it should be treated.

What is it?

It is a mild rash that affects about half of all newborn babies. It usually appears within 48 hours of birth and can often be seen in just a few days.

It appears as small, red bumps on the stomach and face. However, it can also appear on the arms or legs. This is uncommon. It can sometimes look like a raised, spot-like blotch with small pustules or bumps. This is what is commonly called acne.

The causes of infant acne

There is currently no clear explanation for baby acne. Although some scientists believe that inflammation could be caused by the infant’s inexperienced immune systems, this hypothesis has not been proved.

It is clear that acne is not caused by an infection, despite the appearance of pustules. When it comes to erythematoxicum neontorum, there is no statistical distinction between breastfed and formula babies.

The condition appears to be more common in male babies than it is in females. Around half of male newborns have the condition, while a third suffer from it. Baby acne seems to be linked to gestational age. It is highly unlikely that preterm babies will develop it.

How should ETN be treated?

ETN is not something that a doctor can prescribe. The condition should resolve on its own. Your baby will not feel any discomfort despite the rash appearing. Therefore, no special treatment is necessary.

Parents and caregivers should not wash the affected areas too often and avoid harsh soaps that could dry out or irritate their skin. As it increases the chance of infection, this is more likely than to help the healing process.

Most cases of rash last only a few days. It may temporarily return, but it is more common to see a milder rash that is less visible. ETN is uncommon after 6 weeks.

When to Call a Doctor

This condition is not considered dangerous but you should seek medical advice if the rash persists. This is especially true if your baby is experiencing fevers, difficulty feeding or other symptoms. To put your mind at ease, a doctor might perform some tests.

Parents worry about their newborn baby’s health. This condition isn’t serious and won’t cause any harm to your baby. It usually resolves in a matter of days and does not require any special treatment.
